I find that it is not the circumstances in which
we are placed, but the spirit in which we face them, that constitutes
our comfort.

Breast Cancer Survivorship Clinic
Hello everyone. I must be nuts? Not only am I walking in the WEBC this September, a 60km walk over two days to benefit Princess Margaret Hospital, but now I've signed my butt up for the Ride to Conquer Cancer as well, a 200km bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls! I've got a ton of fund raising and even more training to do now. If you wish to read about why I'm riding, please visit my personal page here.

New resource for Women diagnosed with
Breast Cancer |
Reflections of a Woman - My memoir of breast cancer: loss,
love &
laughter. By Lisa Tugnette
| On the to-do list of Lisa Tugnette’s life,
breast cancer did not make the cut. Yet in 2003, at the age of thirty-six,
she became the fourth woman in three generations of her family to
be diagnosed with the disease. On top of it all, Lisa was diagnosed
on the same day as her mother. As a result of her experience, she
wrote Reflections of a Woman. One-part memoir and one-part guidebook,
her tale offers an intimate first-hand account of her diagnosis, treatment,
and recovery, along with advice for other breast-cancer patients.
Tugnette doesn’t gloss over any aspect of her trial, with its physical, emotional, and psychological side effects. She openly discusses her struggle with depression following her diagnosis, her fears about the effect her altered body would have on her marriage, and her misgivings about breast reconstruction. She voices her unexpected sensitivity to seeing models in fashion magazines, watching love scenes in movies, even walking past a lingerie store. Faced with the stark reminder of her mortality, Tugnette reflects upon the unconditional love of her husband and children, the friendships formed in her breast-cancer support group, and her renewed respect for life. By sharing the intimate details of this painful experience, Lisa Tugnette offers inspiration to other women, particularly those under the age of forty-five, struggling with a disease that wreaks havoc on body and soul. She acknowledges that, although breasts don’t define a woman, they do play an integral role in femininity and sexuality. Reflections of a Woman is a celebration of that femininity, of its complexity, its value, and its fortitude. (A portion of the proceeds from Reflections of a Woman will be
donated to Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada and Breast Cancer
Action Kingston.) |
